A Fond Farewell to RFA Argus: A Maritime Legacy Sails On

The recent departure of RFA Argus from the tranquil waters of the River Fal marks the end of an era, stirring reflections on Cornwall's rich maritime heritage and its enduring connection to the sea. Written and presented by Director, Mark Willson.

A Familiar Sight on the Fal
There are moments on the Fal that remind you just how special this stretch of water is. Yesterday was one of them.

Since February, RFA Argus (A135) has been a familiar sight lying quietly at anchor off Tolverne, becoming almost part of the landscape and a regular feature of my daily commute across the River Fal aboard the King Harry Ferry. Then, on yesterday's high tide, assisted by powerful tugs, she finally slipped her mooring and made her way towards Falmouth Docks, where she is expected to undergo further de-storing before eventually being dismantled for scrap.

A Privileged View from Philleigh Slipway
Standing on Philleigh Slipway, it was impossible not to appreciate the sheer scale of the ship. The video simply cannot convey it. At over 175 metres (574 feet) in length and displacing almost 29,000 tonnes, Argus dwarfed everything around her as she moved slowly up the River Fal. Expertly escorted by her tugs, she negotiated the sweeping bend towards Turnaware Point, offering a final reminder of the immense scale and presence that had made her such a familiar sight on the river.

I'd hoped to watch from the King Harry Ferry itself, but when I arrived it was completely full. If only I'd been one car earlier! In the end, though, I wasn't disappointed. The waterside viewpoint at Philleigh Slipway proved to be the perfect place to witness such an unusual and memorable sight.

A Ship with an Extraordinary Record of Service
For more than four decades, RFA Argus served the Royal Fleet Auxiliary with distinction. Originally built as the merchant container ship MV Contender Bezant, she was requisitioned during the Falklands War before later being converted into one of Britain's most versatile support vessels. Although often referred to as a hospital ship, she was far more than that, providing aviation training, casualty reception, humanitarian relief and operational support across the globe.

From Military Service to the Big Screen
Many people will also recognise her from the 2013 blockbuster World War Z, starring Brad Pitt. Filming took place in Falmouth, where Argus was transformed into a fictional American naval vessel before CGI added an entire carrier battle group around her. It remains a fascinating chapter in both Cornwall's and the ship's history.

A Fitting Place to Spend Her Final Days
There is another poignant connection between RFA Argus and the waters where she spent her final months. Just around the corner lies Turnaware Point, one of Cornwall's most significant World War II sites. In the days leading up to D-Day, Tolverne served as a critical embarkation point where thousands of American troops and vast quantities of military equipment were ferried across the Channel to the beaches of Normandy. General Dwight D. Eisenhower visited the site to rally the troops before the invasion.

For a vessel that spent more than four decades supporting military operations and humanitarian missions around the world, there could scarcely have been a more fitting place to spend her final months than these historic waters.

The End of Another Chapter on the Fal
As she made her way up the Fal yesterday, there was a genuine sense that this was about far more than another ship movement. It marked the closing chapter of a vessel that had quietly served Britain for decades, supporting military operations, humanitarian missions and disaster relief around the world.

For those of us fortunate enough to witness her departure from Tolverne, it was a privilege. The River Fal has witnessed centuries of maritime history. Yesterday, it quietly bid farewell to another chapter.

Fair winds, RFA Argus.
